Your Time in The World

Time, we are always cut down by time. What is time..? Why do we sacrifice so much of our brain processing power to “make the time”..?

Time is one of our biggest limitation in this society we are living, and I(we) feel that we need to have our time in the world. I started thinking about “time” when I have my graduation. There is a jargon that says “This is Your Day”. What the hell does it mean..?
After 5 years, now I finally get it. It is that short-time we can have after the long track of education, before our day become someone else’s day since. Actually, even on my graduation day my parents dragged me right away out from the university since we need to be in another city by nightfall –Ha,talk about My Day.

See, each of us are a living being and the fact that time has become not an option for us to keep up with the crowd is one of the foulest thing happened to our species. I am sure we are all familiar with these annoying time-based questions..

“Oh, you’re 22? Still in school? LOL”
”What, you’re 27 not married..? Come on man. Girlfriend..? No..? I don’t believe you.”

…and all the entrepreneurship thing… It’s crazy funny our society is.

Despite how stupid it is, we also understand from history that time is one of the element that makes us productive as a species (agriculture, lifestyle). This dilemma forced us to pick sides..but what really is the insecurity that make us unable to gain access without picking sides..?

For me, having all time in the world is a vision that at first, a salvation.. but after a while, it is depressing (at first) before you actually create something out of it. People are busy because they need to be, and you are here doing nothing because you have finished your agenda. Our crowd psychology will infer that we are not contributing to the society.. or wait.. do we need to..? From this, the keyword is agenda..since if I finished my agenda, I have more time. Talking about agenda we usually have an image of a book which contain to-do tasks or a checklist. Yet what we usually missed is the fact that the tasks in agenda is contributing to a short-term goal that is integrated to the bigger picture of a vision.

The Insecurity of Time

What is Time..?
The measure of value-stream in the game/activity we are in.

Why does it matter..?
Insecurity. Because the freedom of action is limited by time. Mind you the insecurity is not just upon us as the participant since time is also a measure of pride for other people who are associated to us. Yet, their pride is bottom-line irrelevant since this is your life.

How are we limited..?
Your lifestyle is either sucks or you are insecure of something. Well, if your lifestyle is suck, get good. If you are insecure of something, re-set. Take responsibility.

What to Do

Disregard Time Management

Because time management is not productive. The common perspective of our society is that is is managed in a way where we are constrained by the flow of time thus we need time management. That is the current Agreement in the society we live in. What we don’t see is the simple relation behind which is the relation between flow-value and value-stream. For the sake of simplicity, let’s substitute flow-value with money, and value-stream with time.. then, the relation can be read as:

“Time for a work to be done” <->”Money for time spent”

This consequently bring us to :

  1. We are educated to be an efficient money-return machine. Conditioned this way, our pride are based on vanity items, job (how big the excess money after your need is), and of course parents are used to tell their peer about this since it brings them pride.
  2. Pride is then a fear-based achievement. It is pushing you to do stuff. You are not interested, you are not following your passionyou are there because you follow the track. You are in too deep to change your lifestyle (and, uh, career?).

The keyword here is pride, not productivity.

Okay, then what is productivity..?
Productivity is collective performance measured from the activity of adding value. As of now the society is missing the value-added to pride valued (status). This happened because the growth of money (flow-value) has been exponential (credit system, central bank policies) BUT the growth of productivity (addingvalue activities) can’t keep up since we need to keep the job for the people. Inflation is the trend…not to mention growth of population from unproductive families which we will discuss in this discussion as well.

Now, the rate of growth (RoG) for productivity is linearly shown by how much return of money and the show of pride among the neighborhood. This probe the next question of how that RoG relates to what we do as the participant in the system. Depending on your stance in the society, you might see it differently.

Why We Go for Our Jobs

People started with curiosity and passion but when they are in too deep in the system -even if they are good about it- they will not find new goals except ‘will this job make me generate more money?’
Don’t take it wrong. More money is always good, but there is a sweet-spot where the discipline needed to maintain the responsibility is returning that much.

Before we go forward, let us straighten few points here. I am not discussing about productivity, I am discussing about the growth rate of productivity. Why..? This is because an active observer doesn’t like to tackle the same situation twice. If it’s the same condition, it’s either boring or it is a low-value work.

If you think about it, this is why most of us work. We trade our time to gain money since we have a low RoG. This work is also constrained by time management, pushed from behind and that means you risk of producing low-quality results. These all excuses combined, time management is just a cool word of relation between time to money, namely RoG (rate of growth), it degrades to a growth rate of how much you can spend.

In this framework of society, there are then only 2 ways that is sustainable..

  1. Work hard: Trade your time with money.
    Most labor job, most salary job. Labor job is straightforward. Salary job is dependent on how you use your time.
    The thesis : Both type of jobs need you to manage it.
  2. Work smart: Make people trade their time for you.
    This is by far the easiest way to gain time (or money).
    The thesis is : Somebody still need to do that in order for you to have time.

Time management is limited by time itself, it’s utterly stupid. Orange can’t eat orange, right?

If you are a careerist, I suggest you stop reading and continue what you are doing since the society always need more people like you.

Practice Timekeeping

Remember the keyword agenda? Agenda is the progress you need to go through before you reach a goal.

If your goal is to make money, you should be in the 2 solutions above and you don’t need to read this article further down since you will realize of a new problem.

But If your goal is to have more time, keep reading. Let’s talk about Timekeeping. Timekeeping is a mindset that sees time as a product from excellence. It’s not how much time you need to complete a task, but how a task need to be done to have more time. Translated, we need to get high-value results. High-value results means a result that we can evaluate and learn from it to further increase the growth of productivity, written:


As such…

Time is the product, and

Money is the price.

Timekeeping means we are buying the growth of productivity, to shorten the cycle, to reduce/to eliminate the work we need to put in, to extrude a higher quality of result at the same time being careful in not evaluating too much.

Timekeeping is not time management since it doesn’t measure an action according time, but more into managing the task. It can be said that Timekeeping is closer to task management.

Why We Buy

To understand more about this, here is an example.
Person 1 has a job as a programmer, he creates a program so he get his pay, he uses the pay to socialize and keeping his tabs. Person 2 bought that program to keep managing his records easily (that includes the framework to socialize and keeping tabs). From this we can see that Person 1 is working for the money, with his time as the price. Person 2 is trading his money for his time since the program will take care of things for him. Person 2 is constantly evaluating his lifestyle and has higher RoG in his productivity while Person 1 doesn’t grow and trade his time for money. We can see from the example that Person 2 is demonstrating the act of buying when it is on SALE. He bought the program for him to work-smarter so he scores that high-value results and have more time to do whatever he wanted. On the other hand, Person 1 is constantly working because he is lazy to grow his productivity.

We can see that this is similar to a working-smart condition, but timekeeping is more than working-smart. Below are the example of a working-smart environment; a high-value work compared to high-value result.

  1. Working-smart is making people trade their time for you. High-value result is making that job disappear.
  2. Living-smart is to have tolerance between religious people in the same community. Higher-value living is to be secular and not think about religious thing in a community.
  3. Spending-smart is to save more money by not buying computer in the short-term since you already have one… High-value spending is to buy a more powerful program for your computer since after the initial set-conditions you will spent less time on tuning your finance.

We can say that timekeeping is how short your resource-process-cycle need to be so you can reach your qualitative reference in timely manner.

Confused..? Here is another example.
We all know what typical songs is about 3-4 minutes. That means, if I will be leaving in 20 minutes, I need to set a timer for 20 minutes, or I can play 5 songs and enjoy the waiting.

Does that mean timekeeping is about action..? What if you are working alone (and need to wait from other people)?
Timekeeping can be attuned to work both with team and solo work. It’s the ultimate flexibility that gives quality and love in the task we dive into… and in a team where we have an equal part of Autonomy, the flow-value is synchronized in the value-stream.

What it means to have a proper Timekeeping

Timekeeping is –“A timely manner”,

  1. how excellent your work need to be so you can have dinner with your children,
  2. how sufficient your wealth so you can have the security luxury you want,
  3. how attentive you need to be so you can understand your partner’s needs,
  4. how responsible you need to be so you can live like you want to be,
  5. how discipline you need to avoid things to be a better person.

It’s not “how fast you need to be” but “how much time you can save”.

This simple change of mindset makes us rethink a whole different framework of action.. of course it’s always a double-edged sword. You can use the same statement to screw somebody up while still being in the legal department.

It doesn’t look like a big deal but notice the elegance of transition among actions, the focus in each action, and the breath of excellence as a habit. The benefit of timekeeping is more than the ability to devise a better plan. The advantage to see closer to goals give room for the unfair advantage of confidence and through that, the mindset of abundance. The idea of timekeeping is not to have faster generation of result since it is not a profit oriented mindset but an altitude oriented. It is not quick profit that we want but a knowledge-base that builds upon wisdom and building resilience to failure by traction.

Excellence is not a 10,000 hrs work, but 10,000hrs work can be one of the most stupid way to get timekeeping rolling. There has been few times that timekeeping makes the flow.. and I loved the flow that brought upon by high-value results since it always picked on new questions unexplored. Sadly, looking at the condition our world is, the answers to these questions maybe so far away, but I believe that in time one will learn something new….and the best part is, an active observer know what they are doing –oh you can’t believe the eyes that says “Seriously? You’re not lying?”

..and you can do that before you have all the time (and money) in the world.

Not Without Danger

Timekeeping require tons of decision making. I decided to share this mindset now, only after I have reiterated so many times about being an active observer. Since being an active observer ensures you have autonomy in your life, which means a sense of responsibility to what decisions you make. Sometimes the decisions we made turned out to be wrong, but that is no biggie since an active observer had identified the potential problem.. there is no way back but to tweak the ongoing system while being careful to not be the problem.

The Danger of Reflection

Wrong reference.  Suppose we revisit the decision made by Person 2 above, if he bought the wrong program, or if he set the program wrong, it won’t generate high-value results but catastrophic responsibility. Person 2 need to reflect on the capability of the program and the capability of the user (himself).

The Danger of Relationship

Authority. Many of us are small potato. We have autonomy yet people with authority will always guaranteed block you out. Since you are aiming for such higher-value results compared to your boss, of course, it’s a threat to their mortgage. As an active observer, be prudent and be aware of this. There’s always a way to lit up the way without burning the bridges.

The Danger of Easy-Going

Timekeeping let you have more time. This flexibility tend to make us having an easy-going attitude. This has been a problem for me once and I lost my chance then. Being easy-going means keeping tabs BUT NOT out of the game. Aim for small victories and be discipline in avoiding easy-going attitude. Remember, excellence is aggressive, not reckless.

Closing words, timekeeping is powerful mindset to practice since it allows us to be much more flexible while ensuring a rigorous growth. As always, it is important to know what one can/can not do, if they are up to the decision to be made. After all, human is what they are and what they do next.

Working is for the lazy.. The diligent spent their time learning.
